Low Carb: Fast Food and Eating Out

August 1, 2012 by Amir Aribokill 1 Comment

Eating out on a low carb diet can be tricky, but it’s definitely easy when you know where to look. Being creative is necessary sometimes, but it’s definitely worth it!

Burger Places

Whether it’s a fast food place like Burger King or a specialty burger place, these are easy. Hold the fries and hold the bun. It’s easy to enjoy your favorite burgers with your favorite toppings without the bun or fries. Be careful of ketchup or other sauces that might have sugar in them though!

Gyro

You can get these from any halal cart or from a Greek place. Just order a gyro platter instead of the gyro roll. These are great and low carb. My favorite is GYRO II on 7th ave between 29th street and 30th street downtown Manhattan. Gyro II makes low carb work it every step of the way!

Street Carts

These are all over the place in New York. You can order chicken over rice, lamb over rice or steak over rice and substitute the rice for a salad as a low carb option. The white sauce is just mayonnaise and garlic, so that’s safe as well.

Mexican Food

Moe’s Southwestern Grill is my personal favorite. I love Qdoba as well. Ordering a burrito naked, without a wrap, no corn, no beans and no rice will leave you full and satisfied. Sometimes they get stingy with the portion size, but that’s understandable. Most Mexican restaurant will offer burrito bowls as a low carb option.

Wings

Wings are awesome. From bars to wing franchise, these tasty treats are a great meal. Be careful with the sauces though. If in doubt, get them “naked”, meaning no sauce. Get the sauce on the side. Avoid BBQ sauce and other sweet sauces. Most simple hot sauces are fine.

Thai Food

Thai food is simple, very tasty and low carb. Just avoid the side of rice and you’ll be fine. Thai food involves a lot of exotic spices and an awesome change if you’re bored of the same thing over and over again. Thai food is pretty low in fat, unless you order food made with coconut. Then you’re set. Just like any Asian cuisine, be careful of sweet sauces.

Seafood

This one goes without saying. Seafood is also a great change of taste if you’re bored of steak and chicken all the time. Seafood salads, lobster, crab legs, shrimp stir-fry, there is so much amazing variety when it comes to seafood.

Diners

Diners are more than willing to help you put together a low carb meal. Most steaks either come with a baked potato or mashed potatoes. You can easily ask the waiter or waitress for  mixed vegetables instead.
