How to Get Better Sleep

November 11, 2012 by Amir Aribokill Leave a Comment

Knowing how to get better sleep is extremely important. We all just go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning. No one really asks how to get better sleep! The best way to get better sleep is to build up to it. The whole 8 hours thing is a load of crap, everyone is different. Knowing how much sleep you really need depends on how your day is.

Key Points

  • Sleep & wake up without an alarm and average out how long you were asleep
  • Make sure there is no noise and your sleeping area is completely dark
  • Don’t go to sleep hungry!
  • Read a book or solve a puzzle right before bed, it will help slow your rhythm
  • Make sure the AC or heat is on and you’re comfortable
  • Very soft classical music may help if you’re having problems with silence

How to get Better Sleep

Go to sleep without setting the alarm clock. Do this for a few days and see how many hours of sleep you naturally get a night. Average the numbers out and use that as a reference.

The idea behind reading a book or doing a puzzle before bed is to get your mind and body relaxed. Once you get into a slow, trance like state, your body is already calm and ready to go to sleep. That’s why it’s also important to use the bathroom and have a full stomach before bed. The AC and heat should be at a comfortable level as well. A cold shower will always do the trick as well! Taking a nap midday may get in the way of your nightly sleep. But if you feel VERY tired, then by all means, go for the nap. Just make sure it’s no longer than 20 min, or else you’ll fall into deep sleep.

Learning how to get better sleep may sometimes mean changing your daily routine. Try exercising at night, coming home to a hot meal, then taking a cold shower. That’s a perfect recipe to great sleep. Adding some classical music to a very dark room may help relax the mind. Keeping the room very dark and covering all the lights is very important as well. Making the room dark will help you relax and reduce cortisol levels in the body. In fact, it’s simple. Just avoid any physical stimulus’. Touch, sound, smell, sight and taste. If all of your senses are “in the dark” so to speak, then it will make falling asleep a lot easier!
