It’s because politics and religion are value based. In other words, opinion based. People want to defend what they feel comfortable with and justify it in any way they can. When they can’t, they become aggressive and defensive.
Unlike science and math, which have conclusive answers, politics and religion do not. We can discuss and agree that 2+2=4. However, we can’t conclude if abortion if “moral” or not. Why? Because morals are subject to interpretation. They are based on opinions, not facts.
Mind your Business People!
People do not like to mind their business. They want to see the world run on their moral standards. People want people others to accept what their views, of what’s right and what isn’t are. The real answer is to mind your damn business and realize that moral debates are useless.
Let people do what they want. If you don’t like it or feel comfortable with it, then don’t do it. You don’t like abortions? Don’t get one then. Don’t go around telling other people they can’t, however. It has nothing to do with you and if you didn’t know whether they had one or not, your life wouldn’t change one bit.
Stop Judging People!
People love to say they don’t judge anyone, but it’s those who are heavily attached to a moral identity who are ironically the most judgmental. The basics of human behavior 101 tells us that behavior and action is heavily influenced by past and present environmental factors.
With that being said, who the hell are you to judge someone based on your values and who the Hell are they to judge you based on their values?
Stop Categorizing People!
The fact of the matter is, a lot of people have a black and white way of thinking. “If you’re not for freedom, you must be against it!”. A better one is “if you aren’t a republican, then you must be a democrat”.
This is an over-simplified way of thinking and is a form of judgement. I was a victim of this the other day in a hotel lobby. I was explaining to my friend how Trump was misrepresented in certain things and a stranger lashed out at me for being a Trump supporter.
I responded by saying “what makes you think I support Trump?” And she said “What the Hell are you doing defending that asshole?” It’s easy to see what happened here. She’s a victim of primitive thinking.
She projected her own actions on me. SHE would defend someone she likes and supports so she assumed I am doing the same. I tried explaining to her that I was just pointing out reality, without attaching myself to it in any way.
Let’s say the President elect for 2017 was Mike Tyson. Regardless of how I feel about his presidential abilities, if someone asks me whether he was an accomplished boxer or not, the real answer is “yes”. Whether I like him or not DOESN’T change the answer.
Focus on Science
Science is how we got to where we are today as humans. Religion and politics have changed so much over the years and have nothing to show for it. There isn’t a SINGLE thing on this planet that we owe to politics and religion. We owe EVERYTHING to scientific advancements.
Leave the opinions, the morals, the values and the ego at home and let people do what they want.
