Mayweather vs Alvarez Results & Review

September 15, 2013 by Amir Aribokill Leave a Comment

Floyd Mayweather Jr. won a majority decision against Canelo Alvarez in what some may call one of his toughest fights. Mayweather vs Alvarez had it’s boring moments, but that’s not hard to see in a Mayweather fight. Judge C.J. Ross scored it 114-114 even, a baffling score. She was overruled by tallies of 116-112 by Dave Moretti and 117-111 by Craig Metcalfe for Mayweather, the new junior middleweight champion of the world by majority decision.

The 114-114 score didn’t fly too well with everyone, but I think there is too much Mayweather bias going on. Mayweather is good, he doesn’t get hit and he has GREAT speed and accuracy. Alverez, however, was really pushing Mayweather in certain rounds. Mayweather would dodge and style, but wouldn’t land as many punches. I don’t agree with the 114-114 score, but I definitely agree with something like 116-112.

Alvarez did well in avoiding frustration. Mayweather usually frustrates his opponents into playing his game, but Alvarez didn’t buy the bullshi’t. He got out boxed, but Mayweather’s mind games didn’t work this time around.

Mayweather is known as a slow starter, so the first two rounds don’t go that well for him, but Alvarez started out slow in this fight as well. He kept the effective pressure on Mayweather early on, but it wasn’t enough. The rounds were close, simple because Mayweather doesn’t put combinations together well. His offense is underrated in my opinion, but people are afraid of getting countered. Alvarez started to frustrate Mayweather by making him come forward. Mayweather likes to be the mouse, but Alvarez was patient enough to let mayweather bring the fight to him. Floyd seemed stumped in instances, but Alvarez couldn’t really hit him with anything effective.

I think both fighters looked great in this match. Although Mayweather came out on top, Alvarez didn’t get destroyed. At 22, he’s got a lot ahead of him, maybe even a rematch.

What’s Next for Floyd Mayweather

Now that the Pacquiao fight is pretty much out of the picture, who’s next for this undefeated fighter? Some say the winner of Lucas Mathysse and Danny Garcia should fight Mayweather, but who knows what Floyd will do. Danny Garcia preformed brilliantly against Mathysse, who was the favored fighter in the bout. Garcia took the win convincingly and has many people raising eyebrows. I think Danny Garcia vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be a decent fight, but too many people sleep on Danny Garcia, just because he’s not an extremely stylish or exciting fighter.

The luxury of being on top of the game means having everything in your favor. Mayweather can choose his next opponent at will, but has pressure in the public to make his choices count. The Mayweather vs Alvarez fight was a really good thing for boxing. With all the politics and horrible management, boxing is sinking. We need more fights like this to prove this competitive sport  is about more than money. No matter who Mayweather’s next opponent is, I hope he can create more fights like this.
