Reading between the lines is such and automatic thing that many of us aren’t even aware we do it. Yes, language is very interpretable, but in serious situations, it’s always better to make sure what someone means. It’s much better than just assuming they mean something, even if it seems intuitive.
How many times have you caught yourself saying something like “what is he trying to say?, Who does he think he is? What is she up to? I see what’s happening here”.
I’ve learned that instead of reacting, to simple ask a follow up question to clear the confusion. Even if it seems as clear as day, I’d rather make sure someone’s explanation or insult is intentional before addressing it.
Most arguments aren’t the cause of miscommunication, but misinterpretation. People find themselves reading between the lines. Like “oh, he thinks he’s so smart! or “that bitch thinks she can make herself look better than me in front of my friends by correcting me!”. That might be true, but it’s better to know for sure before addressing emotional interpretations like that.
This is very apparent when it comes to the workplace. The boss feels like they are owed a certain degree of respect so when an employee offers a critique, the boss might feel disrespected. This is because the boss took it beyond the words.
Have any of you noticed similar behavior around you? Don’t hesitate to share!
